Horror movie The Conjuring topped the weekend box office, taking in US $41.5 million.
The R-rated flick stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators who are called to a Rhode Island home after series of mysterious events.
The opening set a new record for an original R-rated horror movie ahead of last month’s The Purge, which took in $34.1 million, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported.
Despicable Me 2, which had held on to the No.1 spot for two weeks, dropped to second. The animated children’s movie made $25 million.
In third place was Turbo, another animated kid’s flick – but this one follows a snail who is mysteriously granted superspeed and competes in races.
The movie took in $21.5 million, the lowest start for a DreamWorks movie since 2006’s Flushed Away.
