Dead fish turn up in High Park pond

Hundreds of dead fish have been found floating in Grenadier Pond in High Park over the past week.

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) said the die-off included mostly sunfish, but also yellow perch, rock bass, black crappie, northern pike, largemouth bass and goldfish.

“Small fish die-offs aren’t unheard of in Grenadier Pond,” ministry spokeswoman Jolanta Kowalski said in an email on Friday.

“In the past they’ve been caused by storms and extreme heat, but we need to wait for test results to find out the cause of this one.”

The MNR has sent four bluegill sunfish to a University of Guelph lab for testing, and the Ministry of the Environment has taken water samples.

Results could take several weeks.

Kowalski said people and their pets should never eat sick or dead fish.

A city-led cleanup starts Saturday and will continue as fish continue to wash up on the shores.
