Peter Capaldi announced as next ‘Doctor Who’

Scottish actor Peter Capaldi will be the next Doctor Who.

The BBC made the announcement during a live, one-hour television special on Sunday.

“Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege,” Capaldi said in a statement released shortly after the announcement. “Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”

Capaldi will take over the role from Matt Smith and be the twelfth incarnate of the iconic character.  Smith, who played the time travelling, humanoid alien for four years, will end his run during the show’s 50th Anniversary special in November.

Capaldi will then take over the role during the Christmas special set to air in December.

While perhaps not a household name in North America, Capaldi has won awards for his work in the BBC comedy series The Think of It and The Loop. He also won the Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action) for Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life in 1995. He has also had roles in Dangerous Liaisons, World War Z and Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Doctor Who first aired in 1963 and has become an international cult television classic.
