TTC to speak with Yatim family about future of streetcar where teen was shot

The TTC will speak with the family of Sammy Yatim about the future of the streetcar the 18-year-old was on when he was shot by police during a confrontation on July 27.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told CityNews transit officials will speak with the teen’s family on Tuesday, likely by phone, about their feelings on returning the streetcar to service.

Yatim died in hospital after a clash with police just after midnight at Dundas Street West and Bellwoods Avenue, west of Bathurst Street.

The Special Investigations Unit said Yatim died after receiving multiple gunshot wounds during an “interaction” with police. A Taser was also used.

Nine shots can be heard on witnesses’ videos, and security camera footage shows Yatim pacing a streetcar then dropping to the floor after the initial volley of three shots. Witnesses said Yatim was armed with a knife.

The TTC continued to run the streetcar for two days after the shooting and then pulled it from service on Tuesday, according to a report by The Toronto Star.

Ross said the TTC needs the streetcar back in service but they are considering the option of retiring the vehicle’s number to avoid drawing attention such as someone creating a shrine.

However, Ross added that don’t want to make it seem as if they are hiding the incident.

TTC CEO Andy Byford is expected to speak with the media following the conversation with the Yatim family.
