Elysium, the latest sci-fi thriller from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, topped the weekend box office, raking in US $30.4 million.
The movie stars Matt Damon as a second-class citizen who dares to travel to the first-world realm ruled by Jodie Foster.
Blomkamp, who has said the movie isn’t science fiction, and in fact describes the world as it exists today, explored similar themes in District 9.
District 9, which also focuses of segregation, was independently financed, but Elysium had the backing of TriStar Pictures.
We’re The Millers, a comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston, was No. 2 at the weekend box office, taking in $26.5 million, according to Hollywood-tracking website BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Including Wednesday and Thursday, We’re the Millers has already earned over $38 million, the website reported.
In third place was Disney’s Planes. The Cars spin-off took in $22.5 million.
