Man dies in multi-vehicle crash involving stolen taxi

A 60-year-old man has died after a multi-vehicle crash involving a stolen taxi cab in the city’s west end on Monday morning.

The three-vehicle collision happened around 8 a.m. at Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West.

CityNews has learned that the incident began when a man got into a fare dispute with a taxi driver, then allegedly stole the cab and ran a red light – causing a crash involving two other vehicles.

A 23-year-old man, who was allegedly driving the stolen cab, was taken into custody near the scene and is facing numerous charges.

The victim, who was Toronto’s 33rd traffic fatality this year, was driving a Ford Escape. He and his daughter, who was in the passenger seat, were rushed to hospital where the man later died of his injuries. The 39-year-old woman remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not been disclosed.

The driver of the third vehicle – a rolled-over pickup truck – suffered minor injuries.

“Speed is absolutely a factor,” Const. Clint Stibbe told reporters.

“You have the Co-Op cab which sustained catastrophic damage to the front of the vehicle,” he said, adding the driver’s side of the blue Ford Escape also had substantial damage.

The intersection was closed for the investigation and reopened around 1:30 p.m.
