Key to Toronto presented to Doug Holyday

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford presented a key to the city on Tuesday afternoon to outgoing deputy mayor Doug Holyday who’s going to Queen’s Park.

The ceremonial key was presented to Holyday at city hall to honour his outstanding civic contributions.

“As my deputy mayor Doug stood beside me through thick and thin,” Ford said. “There’s very few people who’d do that. Now Doug’s leaving us to represent the community he loves at Queen’s Park.”

He described Holyday as “level-headed” mentor and “voice of reason.”

Holyday said, “I’m very pleased to receive the honour” and that he “will be displaying this proudly for the rest of my life.”

Holyday, who has been a politician since the late 70s and is a former Etobicoke mayor, was elected as MPP on Aug. 1 in a byelection in the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

Ford has called a special meeting of councillors for Aug. 26 to decide how to replace Holyday’s vacancy in Etobicoke Centre. Councillors will have to vote whether to fill his vacancy by appointment or a byelection.

On Monday, the mayor announced that Coun. Norm Kelly was appointed deputy mayor as expected.
