More job cuts at BlackBerry

BlackBerry confirms to 570News close to 100 local jobs were cut on Monday.

It follows 250 jobs losses at its new product testing facility in Waterloo in late July.

The employees laid off on July 23 were part of the New Product Testing Facility, a department that supports BlackBerry’s manufacturing and research and development efforts.

The global smartphone company announced plans last year to cut about 5,000 employees jobs as part of its restructuring efforts.

BlackBerry is trying to recover a stronger position in the highly competitive smartphone market with its new BlackBerry 10 line of phones and operating system.

Last week, the company’s board of directors launched a review of “strategic alternatives,” a move which it says could also potentially take BlackBerry in other directions, such as a partnership or joint venture.
