Parents charged with murder of infant son

York regional police have charged the parents of a one-month-old boy with second-degree murder in his death.

The Markham boy was brought to hospital on Aug. 22 without any vital signs. Police say the boy sustained blunt-force trauma to the head.

His parents — Kien Phat Tran, 21, and Thi My Phuong Bui, 22 — were arrested Tuesday.

“It is shocking and disturbing for everybody involved — the first responders at the hospital, officers and investigators,” said Const. Andy Pattenden

“It’s tough for everybody involved. It hits home with a lot of folks.”

Neighbours told CityNews an older couple lived with the accused in their home on Lucien Street, near Highway 407 and McCowan Road.

“Our investigators are looking for anyone that has any information on the family or anything with regards to the family leading up to the incident that took place,” Pattenden said.

Tran and Bui appeared in court Wednesday and were remanded in custody until Sept. 4.
