Toddler in critical condition after balcony fall

A 17-month-old boy is in hospital in critical but stable condition after falling from a seventh-floor balcony.
Emergency crews were called to an apartment building on Thorncliffe Park Drive around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Neighbours tell CityNews the toddler went out onto the balcony while his mother was preparing food, and managed to climb onto a chair before falling over.
Paramedics say the toddler suffered serious injuries but was conscious and breathing when they arrived on scene. Family friends say the boy suffered a punctured lung and broken leg.
Police say the boy was lucky to fall onto a small patch of damp grass.
“It had been watered recently and it was quite soft, so the impact was absorbed somewhat by that,” said Det. Chazz Stern.
Police have the ruled the fall accidental.
