Scarborough subway a decade away: report

A Scarborough subway could be a decade away, according to a published report.

Citing a Metrolinx consultants’ report, the Toronto Star also reported it would be five years before shovels even started digging.

The Star said more than 40,000 daily Scarborough RT riders would spend at least three of those years riding buses while the subway extension is being built to the Scarborough Town Centre.

But Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray told the paper he’s optimistic it’d be delivered sooner.

On Wednesday, Murray confirmed the minority Liberal government would go ahead with a Bloor-Danforth subway extension, which the city approved over light-rail transit (LRT).

But he said the government would put up $1.4 billion to build a truncated version: two stops at Lawrence and Scarborough City Centre stations.

The money would fund only two-thirds of the subway line city council approved and is $400 million less than what was promised for the original plan to build LRT there, which would have served seven stops.

There has been no federal response yet on infrastructure funding to help offset costs for this subway.
