Walk raises $8M to end women’s cancers

Cancer survivors and their supporters braved the rain on Saturday for the second leg of a two-day walk through the city and along the lake.

More than 3,600 people took part in the 11th annual Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, which raised more than $8 million for research and treatment at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

“I was diagnosed with stage two invasive breast cancer in 2012 and I am so grateful for the comprehensive treatment and care I received at the Princess Margaret,” said Karen Kingsley, a participant from Toronto.

“If it wasn’t for the Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Clinic, I don’t know what my outcome would have been today.”

The event is the largest multi-day walk for women’s cancers in North America and has raised more than $141 million for Princess Margaret.

This year in Canada, more than 35,000 women will be diagnosed with breast or gynecologic cancer and more than 9,000 will die from the disease.
