Ceremonies, tributes mark 9/11 anniversary

Victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks were remembered Wednesday during ceremonies and tributes in the United States and elsewhere.

U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden and their wives took part in a ceremony at the White House, and observed a moment of silence on the front lawn shortly before 9 a.m.

In New York, relatives were expected at the memorial plaza to recite the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died when hijacked jets crashed into the World Trade Center.

Name-reading, wreath-laying and other tributes were expected to be held at two other sites where other hijacked planes crashed: in Washington and in Shanksville, Pa.

In Toronto, a service to mark the 9/11 anniversary was expected at Woodbine Park in the east end.
