Police locate George Smitherman’s husband

Toronto police found George Smitherman’s husband alive but in distress on Wednesday after he went missing for two days.

Christopher Peloso was reported missing Monday, and was found this morning near train tracks in the Lansdowne and Dupont area. He was taken to Toronto Western Hospital.

Toronto police say Peloso, 39, was last seen around 4 p.m. on Monday in the Davenport Road and Bathurst Street area.

Police tracked Peloso’s cellphone signal to the area and a police tracking dog discovered his exact location. He was found curled up against a fence line in medical distress.

“It’s a fantastic feeling. Someone unfortunately went to the hospital but he’s still alive,” an officer who handles the dog said. “We didn’t have to knock on someone’s door saying we found your loved one but he didn’t make it.”

Smitherman thanked police on social media, posting messages on Facebook and Twitter. During a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, he thanked the media, police and the public for their help and hinted at a possibly long road to recovery for his partner.

“The path forward isn’t firmly clear,” he said, adding “except that we know it’s long and will be hard.”

The couple have been married since August 2007 and have two children.

Smitherman unsuccessfully ran against Rob Ford in the 2010 Toronto mayoral election. Before that, he served as deputy premier and minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
