Province will move forward with Scarborough subway extension: Wynne

The province is sticking with its two-stop Scarborough subway extension even though the TTC chair says it is not feasible.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has reaffirmed the province’s commitment to getting the line built.

“It’s something that’s gone back and forth,” she said. “I became minister of transportation in 2010 and the debates began then so we need to move ahead.”

“We’ve got that money on the table and we’re going to continue forward on that build.”

TTC Chair Karen Stintz and Toronto city council want the line to go up to Sheppard, not just to Scarborough Town Centre.

Stintz says it’s not a subway but an elevated two-stop route.

“When this is built, I’m on the subway and I come to Kennedy station, I stay on the subway and go on the extension so the fact is, it is a subway,” Wynne said.

The provincial proposal would be built along the existing Scarborough RT Line but before it can go ahead, city council has to agree to a change to the current master agreement with Metrolinx.

Stintz and Mayor Rob Ford have expressed concerns it would mean the city would be on the hook for the millions already spent on the previous LRT plan.
