Kenya Defense Forces take control of mall 2 days after attack

The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) have taken control of the Westgate Mall, two days after it was attacked by terrorists, the Kenyan Interior Ministry said Monday.

So far the government has confirmed that 62 people have been killed and more than 175 have been injured in the attack. Ten security officers have also been injured and are receiving treatment.

Kenya’s foreign minister announced on Monday that “two or three Americans” and “one Brit” were among those who attacked a Nairobi shopping mall.

Explosions were heard at around 13:30 p.m. local time as heavy smoke spread above the mall, and intense gunfire continues to be heard. Media and residents were escorted out of the area while ambulances, tanks, firetrucks and police vehicles were sent in.

The Interior Ministry announced later on Monday that the KDF has taken the mall under control.
