Suspected impaired driver rear ends OPP cruiser

A suspected impaired driver rear ended an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser on Highway 401 in Pickering on Monday morning, injuring an officer.

OPP Const. Lisa McIntyre said the officers were stopped in the far right lane just east of Brock Road to investigate a crash between a tractor-trailer and a BMW.

The driver of a Subaru Legacy then rear-ended the cruiser, causing significant damage to the vehicle.

One OPP officer and the Subaru driver were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

It’s not yet known how the original crash happened, but the driver of the BMW was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

Charges are pending against the Subaru driver.

All lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed but have since reopened.
