Body found after fire in abandoned downtown building

A body has been discovered inside an abandoned building that caught fire early Monday morning in the Bathurst and Dupont area.

The fire began on the second floor around 5 a.m.

Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution and Bathurst was closed for the investigation.

At the height of the blaze a dozen fire trucks and 45 firefighters were on scene.

Three units in the building were damaged in the fire.

The body was discovered several hours later during an investigation into the fire.

Police say they are unable to determine the age or gender of the victim.

“Right now we’re not ruling anything out but right now we are in the midst of the identification process,” Det. Robert Choe told CityNews.

One neighbour told CityNews she has never seen anyone go in or out of the abandoned building.
