Durham police seize $5.4M in marijuana

Durham Regional Police have seized $5.4-million in marijuana in a two-month investigation resulting in dozens of arrests.

As a result of community complaints, police initiated Project Mosquito during August and September, investigating rural and urban areas in Durham Region.

Officers seized more than 4,100 marijuana plants and 100 pounds of dried marijuana, as well as hashish and other illegal substances with a total street value of $5.4-million, police say.

Police also seized four firearms and illegal firearm parts, including silencers and over-capacity magazines. Two vehicles and $44,655 in cash were seized in connection with the investigation.

Police say 56 people are facing 176 charges.
