Telephone scam bilks GTA seniors out of thousands

A telephone scam has reportedly bilked senior citizens in the GTA out of thousands of dollars.

Toronto police say callers claiming to be the target’s grandchild say they are in some sort of trouble and need money.

It’s been reported that the caller says they have been in a car accident, been arrested or are having trouble returning home from a foreign country.

After requesting the money be sent to them through a commercial wire transfer service such as Western Union or Money Gram, the caller then reportedly asks the senior not to tell anyone else in the family of the problem.

Police say they believe the scammers obtain personal information on the senior through obituaries or social media.
