Burlington man dead after car plunges into Lake Ontario

A 21-year-old Burlington man is dead after his vehicle was found overturned in Lake Ontario in Burlington Saturday.

Halton Regional Police received a call at about 9:45 a.m. about an overturned vehicle in Lake Ontario near Lakeshore Road and Walkers Line.

Firefighters entered the water and retrieved the body of the lone driver.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation, police say the man’s 2007 Volkswagen was travelling southbound on Walker’s Line, south of Lakeshore around 2 a.m., when it mounted the curb at a dead end, drove through a parkette and chain link fence and plunged into the lake below.

The man’s name is not being released at the request of his family.

Foul play is not suspected.

Recovery of the vehicle may take another few days due to the dense terrain from shore, police say.

Police continue to investigate.
