Prince George christened at St James’s Palace

Well-wishers and royal fans gathered outside St James’s Palace on Wednesday for the christening of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby, Prince George.

The three-month-old third-in-line to the British throne was baptised in a private low-key ceremony inside the Chapel Royal at the palace.

An official photograph to be released on Thursday will show the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth posing with the three heirs, her son Prince Charles, Prince William and the baby Prince George.

“History is being made and for me it is always a privilege to be here,” said 78-year-old Terry Hutt, who camped out overnight in the pouring rain to be close to the action.

On the guest list were Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, Prince Harry, Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton and her siblings Pippa and James.

Prince William and Kate have chosen seven godparents:

  • Oliver Baker, who went to the University of St Andrews with Prince William and Kate
  • Emilia Jardine-Paterson, who went to Marlborough College with Kate
  • Hugh Grosvenor, the son of the Duke of Westminster
  • Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, former private secretary to Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry
  • Julia Samuel, a close friend of Diana, the late Princess of Wales
  • Zara Tindall, Prince William’s cousin
  • William van Cutsem, a childhood friend of Prince William

The christening was the first time in over 100 years that four generations of royals are photographed together, with the Queen, her son and heir, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George all in one frame.

Prince George was born in St. Mary’s Hospital in London on July 22.
