Man, 20, shot and killed while celebrating his birthday

A 20-year-old man is dead after a shooting in the city’s east end early Sunday morning.

The victim, now identified as Gaethan Kitadi, was shot in the upper body at Main Street and Kingston Road around 12:30 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Kitadi was celebrating his birthday with friends at an apartment in the building where he lived when a group of people arrived.

“It appears that 15 minutes later after these males arrived a large group of party goers from this party in the building left the building and congregated in the lobby in the vestibule area of 11 Main Street,” Det.-Sgt. Justin VanderHeyden with Toronto homicide explained. “What is obvious is there was some sort of conflict between Mr Kitadi, his friends and another group of people.”

VanderHeyden said it appeared that the victim knew the people involved.

Police are appealing to the those who were at the party to contact them to shed light on the conflict. Although the party was publicized on social media, police say those attending the party were limited to a guest list.

VanderHeyden said they have video footage from the building as well as TTC video from surrounding buses from the time of the incident.

Another Toronto man, Corey Campbell, 26, died after a shooting in the same building on Sept. 8, 2012. Two men have been charged with first-degree murder in that case.
