RIDE spot checks begin in Toronto

Toronto police will be out patrolling the streets and conducting spot checks to ensure motorists don’t drink and drive during the holiday season.

The RIDE spot checks begin Friday and last until Dec. 31. The inspections are also being conducted in the GTA by other police forces.

Earlier this month, MADD Canada kicked off its annual red ribbon campaign at Toronto police headquarters and the organization said between 1,250 and 1,500 people are killed every year in impaired-related crashes and another 63,000 are injured.

Police chief Bill Blair, who hosted that event, said police have made “tremendous progress” in Ontario over the past several years in reducing the incidents of impaired driving and fatalities.

Of the 55 traffic fatalities in Toronto, three were directly related to drinking and driving this year and a similar number of fatalities occurred last year, he said.
