Ford ‘hard at work’ limiting tax hike to 1.75%

Mayor Rob Ford says he’s trying to limit next year’s property tax hike to 1.75 per cent after city staff said it would be higher.

“Over the past number of days, Mayor Ford has been hard at work for the taxpayers of Toronto,” his office said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The mayor and his staff have been in constant communication with a number of city divisions and are reviewing Monday’s budget presentations with city staff, as they continue to advocate for Toronto taxpayers and keeping taxes as low as possible.”

The office said Ford was looking for “additional efficiencies” to reach his goal.

The proposed 2014 budget includes an increase of as much as 2.5 per cent — 0.5 per cent for the Scarborough subway and 0.58 per cent for new city services.

It works out to about $64 per household on average.

Raising taxes by 2.5 per cent would bring in about $18 million more than a 1.75-per-cent hike.
