Preparing for the great shave as ‘Movember’ comes to an end

Love them or hate them, Saturday is the last day for tens of thousands of moustaches nationwide.

Movember — which started in Australia 10 years ago — encourages men to grow a moustache for the month of November and ask friends and family to donate to their efforts.

The event raises awareness and funds for programs to support men with prostate and testicular cancer and mental illness.

Movember Canada director Pete Bombaci said more then 172,000 people signed up this year.

“Another amazing year. Mo-bros from coast to coast came together to change the face of men’s health,” he said. “We’ll once again be the number one fundraising country in the world currently at a little over $25 million.”

Bombaci said that number is sure to grow as corporate matching programs won’t kick in until next year.

“Canadians are an amazing, giving society and community and country and … we relate very much to the Aussie sense of humour and having a laugh with things and poking fun at each other.
