SIU investigates after Durham police shoot man in Ajax

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after Durham police shot a 47-year-old man in Ajax on Monday morning.

Officers were called to Unsworth Cres., near Westney and Taunton roads, just after 10 a.m.

Police said two women complained of being assaulted during a domestic dispute. When police arrived, the man fled naked from the home.

Officers confronted the 47-year-old man on nearby Dring Street.

“A confrontation ensued…and shortly thereafter the man was shot by an officer,” said the SIU’s lead investigator Jon Ansell.

The SIU wouldn’t say how many times the man was shot, or why.

“There are indications that he may have been (armed) but we don’t know that as yet,” Ansell added.

He was rushed to a local hospital and later taken to a Toronto hospital with critical injuries.

No officers were injured.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency which investigates cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
