Sen. Romeo Dallaire crashes car on Parliament Hill

Liberal Senator Romeo Dallaire has apologized after he crashed his car on Parliament Hill Tuesday morning after falling asleep at the wheel.

A statement released by the Liberal party states that Dallaire left Quebec City at 9 p.m. on Monday and drove five hours back to Ottawa. Despite having no sleep, the senator said he felt he was okay to drive to work in the morning.

Dallaire, who served as a peacekeeper during the Rwandan genocide, apologized in a statement given in the Senate.

“I simply ran out of steam and fell asleep and crashed my car,” he said.

He added that he was thankful no one was injured in the crash.

In addition to his travel, Dallaire said he has had trouble sleeping thinking about the 20th anniversary of the genocide and the recent suicides of three Canadian soldiers.

Dallaire drove his BMW into a light pole in front of east block, causing the airbags to deploy. There was  damage to the front end of the car.
