Hundreds lined up — some overnight — to get one of about 1,500 free turkeys at Honest Ed’s annual giveaway on Sunday.
It’s the 26th year the event happened at the iconic Annex store, which announced earlier this fall it would be closing in a few years.
“It’s a yearly tradition,” said Shane Duffy, who arrived around noon on Saturday.
“Last year I was last in line and this year, first in line. I’ve been coming here for so many years.”
Co-owner David Mirvish and his helpers, including actor Matt Gordon from Rookie Blue, started handing out the turkeys and fruitcake when the Bloor Street store opened at 10 a.m.
The earlybirds also got free cookbooks, candy canes and coffee.
“This world would be a better place if there were more people like [the Mirvishes],” Duffy said.
David Mirvish’s father Ed Mirvish, who founded Honest Ed’s 65 years ago, started the turkey giveaway in 1987.
