Vice-principal transferred after Halloween blackface

A vice-principal who showed up to his high school on Halloween dressed as Mr. T, complete with blackface, has been transferred.

Peel District School Board spokesperson Ryan Reyes says the decision to transfer Lionel Klotz from Mayfield Secondary School came as the result of an investigation conducted by the board in November.

The board began its investigation after it received a number of complaints about Klotz’s costume from members of the community as well as a fellow staff member. A photo of the costume was also posted on social media.

However, Reyes said the move is not related to the incident and that Klotz is taking on a new leadership role.

A letter was sent out to parents of Mayfield students on Dec. 3 informing them that Klotz will begin his position as vice-principal at Humberview Secondary School starting Jan. 30.

Following the incident, Reyes said “the vice-principal deeply regrets his conduct and now has a clear understanding of the impact of his conduct.”

An online petition #SaveKlotz2013 attracted 466 signatures and says, “This petition is to show the love of the school and the hope of Mr.Klotz keeping his job! Us of Mayfield have to stick together as a whole, and every signature counts!”
