Mayor Ford hosts media, councillors at holiday party

Mayor Rob Ford was in the holiday spirit at Toronto City Hall on Wednesday as he invited all city councillors and even members of the media to a festive party at his mother’s home in Etobicoke.

The latter showed up in droves, but only three councillors, including the mayor’s brother Doug, followed suit.

“I think some councillors were not here because there was very short notice,” Di Giorgio reasoned.

The thin attendance didn’t dampen the spirit of the event, which also coincided the birthday of the mayor’s wife.

The evening also served as symbolic peace offering to the media, which Ford has battled with vigour since the crack scandal first came to light, at one point calling Toronto reporters “maggots” — for which he later apologized.

On the morning chief Bill Blair announced police had the infamous crack video, the mayor yelled at media to “Get off my property!”

But the welcome mat was rolled out on Tuesday, although no television cameras were allowed inside.

The Ford brothers did allow a few photos to be taken, and Doug and Rob even made a brief cellphone video wishing CityNews a Merry Christmas.

“CityNews, number one!” Doug said with a smile.
