Boy, 9, killed by falling steel in industrial area of Hamilton

A nine-year-old boy has died after a piece of steel fell on him in an industrial area of Hamilton.

He was without vital signs when emergency crews arrived at the scene on Imperial Drive, in the Sherman Avenue North and Burlington Street East area, Sunday afternoon.

The boy was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“The child was at the business with a family member at the time of the accident. (An) investigation revealed that a large piece of metal fell on the child causing severe trauma,” Hamilton police said in a release Monday.

Witnesses who were inside the room at the time of the incident are speaking with police.

Police say the incident was so horrific they have brought in a special team to offer support to the emergency responders who arrived first on scene.

“We reach out to the family at this difficult time and offer our condolences and respect their privacy,” Staff Sgt. Phil Fleming said.

The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate.
