2 storm systems on track to hit GTA

A storm system is expected to move into southern and eastern Ontario, including Toronto and GTA, on Thursday night, and it could impact holiday travel plans over the next few days.

Environment Canada’s special weather statement remains in effect for the region, warning of “significant winter weather” on Friday and into the weekend.

According to the weather agency, two storm systems originating in Texas are expected to track towards the lower Great Lakes. One is expected to start late Thursday night and continue into Friday.

Some of the precipitation associated with this storm system is expected hit southwestern Ontario Thursday evening and will reach the rest of southern Ontario by Friday morning.

The exact location of the storm track will determine whether the precipitation falls as rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, or snow.

Storm number two is on tap to bring freezing rain across southern Ontario late in the day on Saturday and through Sunday. There is also the possibility for significant snow and ice pellets from Lake Huron to the Quebec border.

“The system itself will bring about 15 centimetres of snow. Add another another 15 centimetres to that for lake-effect, so we should be budgeting for anywhere from 15 or 20, to as much as 30 centimetres over the next couple of days,” 680News meteorologist Harold Hosein said.

Forecasters warn there is uncertainty surrounding the exact position of the storm’s path. Any change in the position will affect precipitation amounts and type.

Winter officially arrives at 12:11 p.m. ET on Saturday.
