Free things to do in Toronto over the holidays: skating, farms & flowers

Enjoying cookies and eggnog by the fire is a nice way to spend some holiday time off, but that can get old quick. The City of Toronto has a few good and free reasons to leave the house this Christmas season.

“People have a chance to enjoy the great outdoors in many ways. Take a nature walk on a discovery trail, lace up their skates to enjoy a game of shinny or go for a leisure skate,” Rob Andrusevich, a spokesman for Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, told 680News.

From farm animals to candlelit walks through Christmas flower displays, there is plenty to see and do this holiday besides watch Love, Actually 20 times.

Outdoor Skating

The city is currently operating 51 outdoor rinks where you can partake in this classic Canadian winter activity. Both leisure skating and shinny are available. Check your local rink for schedules and ice conditions. Daily, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Click here for more information.

Riverdale Farm

For a dose of country in the city, visit the cows, goats, horses and other barnyard animals that call this three hectare Cabbagetown farm home. Sit by the duck pond or chat with the farmer during daily duties. High Park Zoo

Home to bison, peacocks and some seasonally-suited reindeer, the High Park Zoo offers a slice of nature in the middle of the city. 1873 Bloor St. W. Daily, dawn to dusk. Click here for more information.

Christmas Flower Shows

Over 30 varieties of poinsettias and other natural wonders are on display as part of the Christmas flower shows at Allan Gardens and Centennial Park. Some weekends you can enjoy the shows by candlelight. Admission is free but donations to the Daily Bread Food Bank are welcome. 19 Horticultural Ave. and 151 Elmcrest Rd. Hiking

With over 300 kilometres of trails in the city, it’s easy to find a hike you like. If you need some guidance, try a Discovery Walk. Maps for the self-guided tours are available on the city’s website.
