Boxing Day madness hits the GTA

Boxing Day madness has arrived in the GTA.

Some shoppers lined up for hours to get great deals on everything from clothing to electronics, with lineups seen at stores across the region.

At the Best Buy at Dundas and Bay streets, about 50 people were lined up before 6 a.m. And at the Best Buy north of Sherway Gardens, the lineup was even bigger.

“I want to find a camera,” Andy Shy said outside the downtown electronics store.

“I have already waited for three hours. I can’t find that cheap a camera. My friends want to buy an iPhone and a television.”

It was the first Boxing Day for Malav Banchan.

“I’m so excited – I’m going to get a list of gadgets. I’ve been here since three o’clock,” he said.

Banchan said he planned to spend about $1000, but he would end up saving about $400.

Last year, a Pollara survey of 1,000 Canadians found that roughly six in 10 Canadians planned to shop on one of the busiest days of the year for retailers.

The survey also found that men were more likely than woman to take advantage of Boxing Day sales at a rate of 66 per cent versus 58 per cent.

One-in-five, or 22 per cent, said they planned to shop for themselves, while 34 per cent said they would buy items for both themselves and others.
