Norm Kelly visits sister in Florida as Toronto recovers from ice storm

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly has apologized for a brief visit he made to his sister in Florida as Toronto continued to dig out from a massive ice storm.

Kelly left on Christmas Day and was gone for 18 hours. His departure drew some criticism from residents in his ward and other areas of the city, but Kelly defended the decision.

“This was a Christmas dinner of more than usual importance for me,” he told CityNews in a phone interview on Thursday.

“Over the last four years, two brothers and a sister have passed. My surviving sister has health issues. I just wanted to be with family.”

Kelly also said he was in constant contact with city officials in Toronto.

He later apologized for the visit, saying there were some situations where a work-life balance is not possible.

“I want to convey my sincerest apologies,” he told CityNews on Friday.
