Smitherman’s husband Christopher Peloso found dead

A statement former MPP George Smitherman posted to his Twitter account claims that his husband Christopher Peloso has been found dead.

The statement, posted just after 4 a.m. on Monday, reads: “We will celebrate his life and we will find comfort somehow in knowing that he has found peace from the depression that has wreaked havoc on his mind.”

Pelos, 40, was missing on Sunday night. Police had said he was last seen around 11 a.m. in the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue area.

Smitherman took to Twitter on Sunday night to express his fear for Peloso’s safety.

It was the second time this year Peloso had been reported missing. In September he was found alive but in distress near train tracks in the Lansdowne and Dupont area after going missing for two days.

Smitherman and Peloso have been married since August 2007 and have two children.

Smitherman unsuccessfully ran against Rob Ford in the 2010 Toronto mayoral election. Before that, he served as deputy premier and minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

The circumstances of Peloso’s death are not yet known.

Ford issued a statement on Peloso’s death, asking Toronto residents to keep Smitherman and his family in their thoughts.

“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Mr. Christopher Peloso, husband to Mr. George Smitherman, and loving father.

I would ask all Torontonians to extend their condolences to the family during this difficult time.”

Premier Kathleen Wynne also addressed Peloso’s death during a news conference about the ice storm recovery efforts on Tuesday.

“Jane and I knew Christopher as just a kind, gentle, loving man, he will be hugely missed,” she said.
