The Inside Story: TCHC’s Gene Jones plans smoking ban, other changes

As he did in his last job with Detroit’s public housing organization, Gene Jones plans to ban smoking inside all public housing units in Toronto. Jones says he knows the transition will not be an easy one, but he’s prepared to fight for the health of non-smoking tenants. If approved, the ban could take effect in 2015.

In this one-on-one, Jones also talked about an innovative new plan he has to give cash and jobs to his tenants. It’s a new program idea to pay tenants to do repair work in an attempt to chip away at the public housing corporation’s $860-million repairs backlog.

Jones also talked about the last year. He says he’s happy with TCHC’s achievements in 2013, despite a few admitted mistakes, like a since-scrapped $2-million makeover for head office.
