SIU probing York police after woman, 18, struck & killed in Scarborough

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after an 18-year-old woman was struck and killed by an unmarked police pickup truck.

The SIU said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Emergency crews were called to the scene in Scarborough near St. Clair and Warden avenues around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Paramedics said they tried to resuscitate the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SIU said she was crossing St. Clair, east of Warden in a north-south direction, when she was struck by an unmarked vehicle driven by an on-duty York police officer.

York police and the Toronto Police Service are also investigating the incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is being asked to to contact the SIU at 416-622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 (ext. 2038). The SIU said there was a TTC bus in the area at the time and they would like to speak to anyone who was on it.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates all reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Police have closed St. Clair from Warden to Pharmacy Avenue for the investigation.
