Family Day 2014: Toronto and GTA events

It’s Family Day on Monday and though schools and many workplaces are closed, there are plenty of things to do around the city.

Skate with NHL players: RBC and the NHL have teamed up to open 35 rinks across southern Ontario, including 15 in the GTA. Celebrity players like Wendel Clark and Olympians will be showing up at rinks throughout the day to surprise skaters. Click here for a full list of rinks and athletes.

HarbourKIDS Skating Festival: Designed for children under 12, the family event features on-ice performances, street dance workshops, arts, crafts, and yes, family skating — all in downtown Toronto. Sunday and Monday, Harbourfront Centre. harbourfrontcentre.com/harbourkids/

Indoor Fun Zone at Downsview Park: There will be an indoor amusement park at the north end of the city, with over 20 rides as well as special attractions for kids like a “bouncy” castle and giant slides. Kids Fest inflatable festival: Billed as Canada’s largest inflatable festival, Kids Fest takes over Mississauga’s International Centre with bouncy rides and slides. The more than 30-themed inflatables are best for children 12 and under. There are also shows, interactive activities, games and crafts. Inuit Museum & dog show: Toronto’s Waterfront BIA is hosting a free day of family events all along Lake Ontario. Watch dog sport demos, create arts and crafts, get up close and personal with Inuit art and warm up with a hot drink. Monday. waterfrontbia.com

Aurora’s Arctic Adventure: Take part in a slew of outdoor sports like a hockey shoot-out, snow shoeing, mini snow-tubing, ice fishing, mini golf and broomball at Aurora’s tribute to winter. There will be also be professional ice carving and a live igloo demonstration. Weather permitting, outdoor skating will also be available. Monday. town.aurora.on.ca/aurora/arcticadventure

Polar Bear Dip: The Arctic comes to the heart of the city with a temporary pool at Yonge-Dundas Square. Take a dip in the custom-built chill pool to raise funds for the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation. If that’s not your thing, check out live entertainment, ice sculpting, face painting and other activities in the Square. Monday. ydsquare.ca/event

Family Day at the ROM: The  popular Earth Rangers animal show returns for a special wildlife long weekend. Meet the museum’s aquarium keeper, check out live reptiles and amphibians, and visit the ever-popular Bat Cave. Saturday-Monday. rom.on.ca/wildlife-family-day-weekend

Mississauga ice maze: Get lost at Mississauga’s ice maze, conveniently located next to the city’s  largest outdoor skating rink. Celebration Square will also be home to face painters, roaming buskers, a ventriloquist puppet show, food trucks and cozy fire pits. Ice maze opens Friday. mississauga.ca/portal/celebrationsquare
