Stintz unveils TTC customer charter as time as chair winds down

Karen Stintz will be retiring as TTC chair as she prepares her 2014 mayoral bid.

In her last days as chair, Stintz — a councillor for Ward 16 Eglinton-Lawrence — stopped by transit control to give a traffic report and an update on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new streetcars.

“It’s going to be rolled out on Spadina first and we expect it by the end of the year,” Stintz said Friday.

Later Friday, Stintz and TTC CEO Andy Byford unveiled the TTC’s second annual customer charter.

Under the new charter, the TTC will post the performance of all bus and streetcar routes on ttc.ca, and hold more public information sessions.

The TTC also promised to conduct satisfaction surveys and use mystery shopper surveys each quarter.

Byford has made transparency a key part of his tenure at the TTC. In a statement Friday, Byford said the TTC was dedicated to continuous improvement.

“Customer charters are developed to clearly articulate measurable improvement to those that matter most: our customers. I look forward to delivering on that,” Byford said.

The first charter was released on Feb. 28, 2013. In a follow up that September, the TTC said 79 per cent of customers said they were satisfied with the service.

However, the commission acknowledged failing grades for the helpfulness of announcements during delays and maps inside buses and streetcars.

Now hiring: TTC chair

Councillors Josh Colle and Maria Augimeri are vying for the TTC position. Mayor Rob Ford said his brother Coun. Doug Ford should be TTC chair and would “straighten things up pretty fast.”

While Stintz has not yet registered to run for mayor, she said as early as December she planned to do so.

Nominations, which must be made with the city clerk, close on Sept. 12. The election will be held on Oct. 27. The term of office is from Dec. 1, 2014, to Nov 30, 2018.
