Doug Ford will not run in possible provincial election

Toronto Coun. Doug Ford says he will not run in a possible provincial spring election and that he will not be seeking re-election as councillor.

Instead, he will focus on running his brother Rob Ford’s mayoral election campaign.

“My priority is obviously my family first,” he said.

“I’m declaring that I will not be running in the provincial election. I’d love to but you have to put other things ahead of your own political aspirations sometimes.”

Doug Ford said he hoped there would be a spring election and threw his support behind Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak

The provincial budget is expected to be tabled in late March or early April and the minority Liberals need the NDP’s support to pass it in order to avoid an election. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has not said if she will actually vote against it.

The mayor also spoke Thursday with reporters at city hall, saying his brother would eventually lead the Progressive Conservative party.

Hudak has remained mum on whether he had asked Doug Ford to run for a provincial seat.
