5 things to do this weekend: Art Galleria Expo, Podcamp & Icefest 2014

Bloor-Yorkville Icefest 2014: Marvel as artists chip away at 20,000 pounds of ice to create the remarkable sculptures that will highlight the ninth annual two-day festival. If you’re dreaming of a winter escape, you may appreciate the “Heat Wave” ice display, which brings the tropics to Toronto through sculptures of palm trees, tropical flowers and sail boats. There will also be ice carving competitions and a live DJ. Village of Yorkville Park. Friday and Saturday. Noon – 5 p.m. Free. http://www.bloor-yorkville.com/icefest/

Art Galleria Expo 2014: Over 60 artists will be displaying their work while DJs and live performers set the mood at this event being billed as the Art Expo of the year. All art is reasonably priced between $140-$500. Cube Nightclub, 314 Queen St. W. Friday. 6 p.m.-10 p.m. $15-20. www.artgalleriaexpo.com

Podcamp Toronto: This two-day event attracts the people making a splash in today’s digital landscape. You’ll be able to exchange ideas with up-and-coming and established new media content creators, marketers and podcasters. Active discussion and networking is encouraged, so don’t be shy.  Ryerson University’s Rogers Communications Centre, 80 Gould St. Saturday and Sunday. Free. www.podcamptoronto.com.

1st Annual Skate For Bate: This event hopes to raise money and awareness for Type 1 diabetes in honour of Sean Bate, who passed away last February of complications from the disease. All funds raised will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. Buckingham Arena. 57 Carl Hall Rd. Saturday. 3:15-4:45 p.m. You can donate here.

Toronto Swing Dance Society: Get into the swing of things and break a healthy sweat at this beginner-friendly swing dance event. Partners are frequently rotated so you’ll get to practise with dancers of varying skill levels. Live band Little Peter and the Elegants will provide the soundtrack for a full night of grooving. The Lithuanian House, Hall B, 1573 Bloor St. W. Friday, 8 p.m. $10 for members, $15 for non-members. http://torontoswingdancesociety.ca/
