Hwy. 400 reopens in Innisfil after massive pileup

Highway 400 has reopened in Innisfil after it was shut down for most of the day for a massive pileup.

Ninety-six vehicles were involved in the collision near Innisfil Beach Road on Thursday morning as a snow squall blew through the area. No major injuries have been reported.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed from Highway 9 to Mapleview Drive, while the southbound portion was closed from Mapleview to Innisfil Beach Road.

“We have vehicles everywhere. It’s just like an accordion effect,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said at the height of the cleanup effort.

He also said numerous sections of the guardrail had to be repaired.

“It’s a strange one here … I just got to King Road [and] I had to get off the highway while the snow just pulled in at around 90 km/h. You can’t see 10 feet in front of you,” one driver told 680News.

South Simcoe Police said driving conditions were treacherous in the Innisfil, Bradford and Cookstown areas, and were recommending drivers avoid all unnecessary travel in the area.
