Busy day at Pearson for March Break getaway

Thousands of elementary and high school students are waking up to the start of their March Break as one of the busiest travel days of the year kicks off.

Around 115,000 people are expected to pass through Pearson International Airport on Friday — that’s around 20,000 more than on a typical day.

Travellers are reminded to check on the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.

For those staying in the GTA, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said the weather will be warmer to start March Break, but that will change next week.

“The colder air returns for mid-week March Break and it will stay with us until into the next weekend. Also, the possibility of some snow [but it’s] still too early to pinpoint where and exactly how much,” Taylor.

It will be mainly sunny on Friday with a high of 3 C, Taylor said. There will be flurries overnight with a low near -2 C. On Saturday, morning flurries will give way to a sun and cloud mix with a high of 2 C and a low near -9 C.

Also, keep in mind, clocks spring forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday, which means we lose an hour of sleep.

Ryerson University’s sleep expert Colleen Carney said the time change will affect many people, including those returning from March Break destinations in different time zones.

“It is exactly like jet lag, so this a mis-match between what time your body thinks it is and what time the clock time reads,” Carney said.
