Police say crashes up 49% this year in Toronto

Toronto police are reporting a substantial increase in the number of crashes this year, compared to the same time period in 2013.

Police told 680News the number of reported fender-bender collisions is up 49 per cent from this time last winter.

Although the weather has been extreme this year, police say drivers are to blame as well.

“Although we’ve had more snow and ice this year, that is a contributing factor; however, in the end, it’s driver error,” Const. Clint Stibbe with Traffic Services said Wednesday.

“Drivers [are] not driving according to conditions, and as a result, we’re seeing that tremendous rise in the number of property-damage collisions that we’ve had in the City of Toronto.”

So far this year, they have responded to 7,639 minor collisions, compared to 5,114 this time last year.

Drivers are supposed to report to police any collision where total damage exceeds $1,000.
