Target planning massive downtown Toronto store for 2016

Target Canada is planning a massive store for downtown Toronto in 2016.

The two-storey Target will occupy 145,000 square feet at the foot of York Street and will be one of the largest stores in the country when it opens, Target spokesperson Lisa Gibson said Thursday.

The store will be located in a mixed-use residential and commercial building that is currently under construction at 1 York St.

The building, known as One York, will be located south of the Gardiner Expressway with an entrance on Harbour Street. The store will be located on the second and third level of the building, with access to the PATH from the second level.

“It’s challenging to get real estate in the downtown south core to begin with,” Gibson said.

“To get something like this prime real estate is pretty exciting for us.”

The Target is scheduled to open in October 2016.

It will be much larger than the typical Canadian Target, which are 114,000 square feet on average, Gibson said, and also bigger than downtown Targets in other cities.

“In the U.S., our urban locations are called City Target and they tend to be a little bit smaller than this store. That’s one of the reasons we’re so excited about this location,” Gibson said.

Target currently has 127 stores across the country, with six more planned for 2014. There are plans for approximately 150 by 2017.
