Bonnie Crombie registers to run in Mississauga mayoral race

Mississauga Coun. Bonnie Crombie was all smiles on Tuesday as she filed papers to run in that city’s race to replace Mayor Hazel McCallion.

Crombie, 54, a former MP, registered as a candidate at Mississauga City Hall at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

She listed infrastructure funding and solving gridlock as part of her campaign platform.

“People are challenged, the city is challenged we need to be accountable to the taxpayers,” Crombie said when she registered.

Crombie joins three other registered candidates: Scott Chapman, Riazuddin Choudhry and Steve Mahoney.

Her main competition is Mahoney, a former councillor, MPP and MP. He registered last week.

A Forum Research poll last week suggested Mahoney would beat Crombie by 29 to 22 per cent in a head-to-head race.

Mahoney has spent about 25 years in politics at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.

Crombie was the city’s MP from 2008 to 2011 and switched over to the role of councillor in the September 2011 byelection after losing her federal seat.

McCallion, 93, won’t be running for re-election this fall, ending her 35-year reign as mayor of Canada’s sixth largest city.
