Speaker’s Corner returns to City

A staple of City is coming back and this time, it’s digital.

Fan favourite Speaker’s Corner is returning, just in time for Wednesday night’s mayoral debate.

Viewers can create, post and share their reaction to the candidates and the debate after 7 p.m. Moving forward, Speaker’s Corner will be open to people sharing thoughts on any subject they’d like.

Videos submitted via Vine, Instagram and e-mail are all welcome, CityNews general manager Dave Budge said, as is pretty much any other digital platform.

“Basically anything other than coming downtown and dropping a loonie into the booth,” said Budge, referencing Speaker’s Corner’s birth as a coin-operated video booth outside the City studio.

“So there’s no cost, there’s no travel, it’s just if you’ve got a smartphone or webcam and an opinion to share, you’re in.”

The original Speaker’s Corner was first opened in 1990 and some of it was used on the TV program. The same approach will be used in 2014 – not all material makes it to air.

A curated selection of the videos submitted will be used on CityNews and 680News’ websites and incorporated into TV broadcasts. First, though, content will be screened for interest level and journalistic merit, said Budge.

“I think it’s a positive development in the type of access that the public has to CityNews,” he said.
