TTC to study adding express buses on busy routes: report

The Toronto Transit Commission is considering whether implementing express buses will ease overcrowding on the city’s busiest routes, according to a published report.

The Toronto Star reported on Thursday that Coun. Josh Colle, who sits on the TTC board, says adding such buses would be a less costly option in the interim until new subways or new LRTs start running.

The board approved the study on Wednesday.

The TTC already operates 11 rush hour buses, most of them in the city’s east and west ends. The study would see more buses added to busy routes during peak times, with drivers making less frequent stops.

The study will also look at dedicated bus lanes, queue-jump lanes and priority signaling.

Transit was a hot-button issue at the CityVote 2014 mayoral debate on Wednesday night, with candidate Olivia Chow emphasizing a deterioration in bus service.
